The following activities provide you with an opportunity to explore The Sun-Herald with the eyes of the Scientist.

News

The News section of the newspaper reports on local and international news events.

  1. Find an article that features a new technology.
  2. Prepare arguments about the potential effects of the new technology on living things and the environment.

Home on Sunday

Home on Sunday is a lift out section. It features architectural and interior designs, news
and advice on homes.

  1. Devise and implement a survey to determine the sustainability of a built environment featured in Home on Sunday.
  2. Compare the results of your survey with a friend to determine which built environment is the most sustainable.
  3. Design a built environment for the future (house, school, office, room) that has sustainable features. Draw and label your diagram.

Advertisement

Advertisements are featured throughout The Sun-Herald to sell different products to readers.

  1. Select a variety of print advertisements throughout The Sun-Herald.
  2. Identify criteria and use fair testing to devise ways to evaluate the sustainability of a selection of products advertised.

Weather

The weather page of The Sun-Herald reports on weather conditions in Sydney, NSW and around the world.

  1. Use a thermometer, rain gauge and wind gauge to record local weather. Ensure it is a fair test.
  2. Compare this data with data from another area featured on the Weather page of The Sun-Herald.
  3. Analyse the data and make conclusions about the similarities and differences in the weather of the two areas.

Sport

The Sports section provides a review of local and international sporting events and personalities

  1. Choose a sporting event from an article in the Sports section.
  2. Measure the ‘Eco Footprint’ of this event. List all the ways that this event may impact on the environment. Use the following headings as a guide: transport, food, beverages, lighting, merchandise, noise pollution, advertising, tickets, programs and other.
  3. Suggest ways to reduce the event’s ‘Eco Footprint’.
  4. Compare the ‘Eco Footprint’ to other sports, for example surfing or motor racing

Television Magazine

Television Magazine is a lift out television guide that provides information on television for the week. Reviews, program times and television news are featured every week.

  1. Locate a lifestyle television show featured in Television Magazine. What environmental messages is the show communicating? How does the show convey these messages?
  2. Work collaboratively in small groups to research an environmental issue that impacts on your life day to day.
  3. 3Storyboard and develop a multimedia presentation that communicates the issue to the public. Use the lifestyle program format to guide you if needed.
