Mawson's Antarctic Expedition 1911

On December 2, 2011 Australians will celebrate the centenary departure of the 1911-1914 Australasian Antarctic Division (AAE) from Hobart.


Led by Sir Douglas Mawson the AAE was the first truely scientific expedition to the Antarctic. The 31 land based members of the AAE departed Hobart at 4pm on December 2, 1911 farewelled by thousands of well wishers and a large number of ships.

On Wednesday, November 2 there was a double page special feature published in The Sydney Morning Herald, highlighting the importance of Mawson's expedition as a historic event in history.
